Canadians find love at work

The office is a popular place for finding a partner.

A survey by CareerBuilder.ca says 35% of Canadian workers have dated someone who worked for the same company, and 15% have done so more than once.

That budding romance may lead to the altar, but it may also mean a trip to divorce court.

Of those who dated someone from the office, 25% ended up marrying their office sweetheart, while 17% admitted they were married or the co-worker they dated was married at the time.

Twenty-two percent of those who dated a co-worker say their office sweetheart was at a higher level in the organization than they were, and 12% dated their boss.

Office romances usually start when co-workers run into each other outside of work (14%), at lunch (14%) or late nights at work (11%). Some other situations that led to romance include love at first sight (8%), happy hour after work (6%) and at a company holiday party (3%).

Sixty-six percent of employees who’ve dated someone from work say they didn’t have to keep the relationship a secret. Sixteen percent say they admitted they were dating when they ran into another co-worker outside of work, while 11% in the same situation covered up their relationship.

The survey was conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of CareerBuilder.ca and included a representative sample of 426 Canadian full-time private sector employees across industries and company sizes.
