A look at mental health in the workplace

Mental health is a growing concern for Canadian employers. According to research by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, mental health conditions account for approximately 30% of all disability claims and 70% of the associated plan costs.

And a 2010 study by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) found that poor mental health is the leading cause of both short- and long-term disability within Canadian companies. For employers, the escalating benefits costs, increased absenteeism and decreased productivity that come from mental health issues are issues that can’t be ignored.

Canada’s Mental Health Week
This week, May 7 to May 13, marks the 61st annual Mental Health Week, an initiative by the Canadian Mental Health Association to raise awareness of mental illness in Canada. The theme for 2012 is Mental Health for All, and the event will focus on five mental health topics: Workplace Mental Health; Resiliency at Home, at School, at Work; Stigma and Discrimination; Kids Have Stress, Too; and Mental Health is Everyone’s Concern. MHCC unveils mental health strategy
The MHCC has released its proposed strategy for mental health care in Canada, which it says will bring about real change for Canadians struggling with mental illness. The strategy, Changing Directions, Changing Lives, is the first of its kind in Canada. Read more…

MHCC introduces workplace mental health guide
MHCC’s new strategy complements its workplace mental health guide, which was launched last week. The guide, Psychological Health & Safety: An Action Guide for Employers, provides employers with steps and concrete actions to help them develop a more psychologically healthy workplace. Read more…

Assessing mental health at work
The Quebec-based Mental Illness Foundation is recognizing Mental Health Week by asking organizations to assess the risk factors in their organization that could be negatively affecting employees’ mental health. How healthy is your organization? Read more…

Government organizations and non-profits aren’t the only ones looking at mental health this week. Employee assistance providers have also turned their focus to the issue, with several providers announcing the launch of new services. Homewood Human Solutions has released a mental health tool kit designed to offer tips and information on improving mental health, while Organizational Health Inc. has announced the launch of three mental health training programs for employers and employees.
