Improving physical, mental health top goal for 2019: survey

The majority (90 per cent) of global adults said improving their physical, mental and emotional health is a top goal for 2019, according to a new survey by WW International Inc.

The survey, which polled more than 10,000 adults in 11 countries, found 74 per cent of Canadian respondents, despite their best efforts, are coming up short when it comes to achieving their health goals. About half said a lack of inspiration (46 per cent) is the top hindrance and 45 per cent said having a partner is necessary to staying in track.

“What we’re learning from this research is that while almost everyone wants to live a healthier life, most still feel like they’re coming up short on inspiration, effective tools, and a sense of partnership,” said Mindy Grossman, president and chief executive officer of WW, in a news release.

The survey also found 55 per cent of all respondents have attempted several diets or eating plans in the last two years, while Canadians said they’ve tried three diets or eating plans on average. Three-quarters of Canadian respondents said the results of short-term diets requiring extreme measures aren’t sustainable on a long-term basis.
