Alberta Legislature prorogued, pension reform bills die

The Alberta Legislature has been prorogued, officially killing all government legislation, including two controversial pension reform bills.

The government also says that the two bills, the Public Sector Pension Plans Amendment Act (Bill 9) and the Employment Pension (Private Sector) Plans Amendment Act (Bill 10), will not be reintroduced when MLAs return to the Legislature in mid-November.

“We are relieved to have these two bills behind us,” says Alberta Union of Public Employees president Guy Smith, “but we will be moving cautiously as the government plans to conduct another review of pension sustainability.”

In a mandate letter released Sept. 17, Premier Jim Prentice directed his new Finance Minister Robin Campbell to review the sustainability and competitiveness of Alberta’s public sector pension plans.

“We hope to see a more constructive and inclusive approach to addressing the future of Alberta’s public sector pension plans than was taken in the last year,” Smith says.
